Lying at the southeast corner of the Songshan Mountain, the Gaowu Astronomical Observatory, designed and established in 1279 by Guo Shoujing, a famous Chinese ancient astronomer，is one of the earliest of its kind and the center of the 27 astronomical observatories of the nation at that time.
