Lying in the Caocun Township of Xin'an County, the Qingyao Mountain is 72 kilometers to the west of Luoyang and 40 kilometers to the north of the county seat of Xin’an. As a scenic area of the provincial level, it is a beautiful place of deep valleys, green peaks, fancy stones, clear waters, various Chinese medicine herbs and rare animals, including those unusual creatures like the giant salamanders swimming in springs.

The Qingyao Mountain is a holy land for Chinese people to seek the roots of their ancestors. Legend has it that Emperor Huangdi (the Yellow Emperor), defeated Chiyou, one of Huangdi’s major enemies here and promoted the intermarriage between people of different tribes with the help of a girl named Wu Luo from a local tribe called “Yao Ren”. This victory is of great significance for the first amalgamation of different nationalities of China.

To the west of the Qingyao Mountain rises the steep and beautiful peak named “Yunv”. On the top of it stands a tumbledown stone column 13 meters tall which resembles a slim girl overlooking the beautiful view from afar. The rising platform named “Heheyuan” lying in the east was said to be the place where Emperor Huangdi allied with Emperor Yandi, Chiyou and other tribes. At the foot of the mountain at the east side grow a kind of valuable Chinese medicine herb- weeping forsythias, flourishing in early springs.

Legend has it Shuanglong Valley (Double Dragon Valley) is the habitat of the two royal dragons of Emperor Huangdi. It is a valley of 5 kilometers long. At the bottom of the north section of the valley where steep cliffs and tumbledown hanging stones scatter stands the Shuanglong Temple built in the Ming Dynasty with the legendary habitat of the two dragons – the Bailong Pond (White Dragon Pond) and the Heilong Pond (Black Dragon Pond) lying behind. The sight of “the Holy Stone and the Divine Tree” is a wonder here. The giant tree growing out of a large stone and towering into the sky with its stretching branches and dense leaves is so impressive that it embodies the hardship of struggling in life as well as the admirable perseverance.
